Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are classified according to the length of the carbon chain: glycolic acid (GA), citric acid (CA), malic acid (MA), tartaric acid (TA), and lactic acid (LA). These acids are found in many plants and milk.
They have effects that may seem contradictory. In fact, they improve hydration by acting as a humectant (capacity to retain water) while having a peeling effect; which explains their high tolerance.
The peeling effect is explained by the action on keratinization. They reduce the cohesion between corneocytes (cells of the superficial layer of the epidermis) until desquamation, making a superficial peel well tolerated and therefore popular. It is indicated for acne, melasma, scars, it refines the skin texture, regulates seborrhea. By stimulating the synthesis of polysaccharides of the extracellular matrix, they improve wrinkles.
However, studies show an irritating and photosensitizing effect at high concentrations, which is why our dermatologist has developed a safe formula suitable for home use. For a complete action, it is important to provide all types of AHAs. This is the case in the Alaena Fruit Acid Peel thanks to extracts of blueberry, sugar cane, maple, orange, and lemon.
